Group Tutoring

Group tutoring is most beneficial when the students have a common intention. For example, common intentions would be studying for a test, discussing an essay, preparing for a presentation, or discussing a particular subject. Group tutoring can only be successful if the tutor possesses great leadership skills. As with Kagan Cooperative Learning, group tutoring has the potential for teaching students/children cooperative attitudes and necessary social skills. Some advantages of group tutoring are:

  • Students are able to share ideas and information
  • Diverse ideas and points of view can be presented
  • Tolerance for differences is developed
  • Students who actively participate are likely to learn and retain more information
  • Students are motivated to study and prepare for tutoring sessions
  • Students learn to think critically
  • Students solve problems for examining solutions from different perspectives
  • Students learn to become sensitive to the feelings of others
